Welcome letter

Dear Candidate,

Thank you very much for your interest in becoming Chair of Practical Action.

Our vision is for a world where innovation and knowledge work better for everyone - meeting needs, fulfilling potential and protecting the planet. Our ambition is that by 2030 we will have transformed the way innovation and knowledge are used to improve the lives of people in poverty.

Through our programme delivery, advocacy reach, our partnerships, research and consultancy, we work to make real changes in the poorest countries in the world.

We want to increase our impact as a globally networked organisation. We have embarked on an ambitious change programme, building on and leveraging our diverse approach so that we bring about long term, sustainable change at a wider scale. As part of this, we are embarking on a review of our international governance structure to ensure we can be most effective in our impact.

Our current Chair of the Board, Helena Molyneux, completes her six-year term of service in 2019. She has been a successful and highly respected leader to the Board. Helena writes:

“Practical Action is a gem of an organisation to chair. It has a strong niche role in development, has a wealth of expertise across the organisation and is up for the opportunities (and the challenges too) that are ahead.”

The board is now looking for Helena’s successor. We want a new Chair who not only shares our vision and can demonstrate commitment and passion - but who can help us as we stretch our horizons.

You will be an experienced leader and an effective communicator, and a great ambassador for Practical Action as well as having the engagement needed to lead the board and work with the CEO.

Your focus during the next few years will be embedding the new strategy and change programme, and shaping and concluding the governance review.

If you share our vision and ambition of changing the way the world sees and uses its own resources, we encourage you to find out more about this rewarding opportunity to join an ambitious change-making organisation, making a positive impact on some of the the world’s biggest issues.
